A no-holds-barred, elegant South Korean morality tale, "The Housemaid" packs an over-the-top wallop for film lovers. Although it is a remake of the acclaimed South Korean 1960 film of the same name by Kim Ki-young, I haven't seen that one yet, so any comparison will have to be left to others. Regarding this version, fans of directors such as Brian De Palma, Wong Kar Wai, and even P.T. Anderson should find aspects of this film to identify with and appreciate. But its true strength and identity lie at its melodramatic core. Director/writer Sang-soo Im's film boasts the cinematic opulence and plot extremities of an American 1950's Douglas Sirk classic, but with ultra-modern décor. In that regard, at least, this is a film that Rainer Werner Fassbinder could most certainly get behind.
